Biography
Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche was born in 1965 at Rumtek Monastery (Dharma Chakra Center) in Sikkim, India. His birth was prophesied by the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, to his parents, Dhamchö Yongdu (General Secretary of the Sixteenth Gyalwang Karmapa) and Lekshey Drolma. Upon his birth, the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa recognized him as the seventh in the line of Dzogchen Ponlop incarnations, and he was formally enthroned at Rumtek Monastery in 1968.
He received refuge and bodhisattva vows from the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa and was ordained as a novice monk in 1974. He later received full ordination as a bhikṣu, but subsequently returned his vows and is now a lay teacher. His teachers include the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa, Dilgo Khyentse, Kalu Rinpoche, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche (chief Abbot of the Kagyu lineage), Alak Zenkar Rinpoche, and Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, his root guru.
At age twelve, he began studying Buddhist philosophy at the primary school in Rumtek. In 1979, when he was fourteen, the 16th Karmapa proclaimed him a heart son of the Gyalwang Karmapa and a holder of the Karma Kagyu lineage. In 1980, on his first trip to the West, he accompanied the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa to Europe, the United States, Canada, and Southeast Asia, serving as attendant and giving dharma teachings. In 1981, he entered Karma Shri Nalanda Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies at Rumtek, studying Buddhist philosophy, psychology, logic, and debate.
During his time there, he worked for the Students' Welfare Union, served as head librarian, and was chief-editor of the Nalandakirti Journal. He graduated in 1990 as Ka-rabjampa (the Kagyu equivalent of a geshe degree) and simultaneously earned the degree of Acharya (Master of Buddhist Philosophy) from Sampurnanand Sanskrit University. He also completed studies in English and comparative religion at Columbia University in New York City.
