Format

Each of the three episodes takes its title and threat from a cursed VHS tape—Silent Night, Red Mask, and Space Parasite—whose playback releases that tape's evil into the store and adjoining spaces. The guests must survive each unleashed horror by working through its rules and puzzles to contain it. Only the second episode uses the series' traditional vote-and-death-challenge format; the first and third episodes stake lives on group survival challenges where capture or falling behind is fatal.

Production

In November 2023, Joey Graceffa launched an Indiegogo campaign seeking $1,000,000 to create a movie for the series; it raised $169,600 from 2,929 supporters. Although the goal was not met, the funds were sufficient to produce "The Lost Episode." Production faced setbacks, including the original director's departure due to personal circumstances, and a financial deadline requiring the Indiegogo funds to be used by the end of 2024 to avoid tax losses. Filming took place at Willow Studios in Los Angeles, utilizing the basement level with pre-built horror environments such as a jail area, mechanic room, hallways, and meat lockers. The project was initially planned as a single film but was restructured into a three-part miniseries after Tubi acquired it for distribution, and was retitled Escape the Night: The Lost Tapes.

Controversy

In February 2025, Tana Mongeau alleged on her Cancelled podcast that she had a negative experience during filming, describing a "creepy encounter" with a masked actor in a meat freezer where she was physically restrained, and claiming her pinky finger was broken and not taken seriously. She also alleged inappropriate behavior by a crew member. Joey Graceffa responded on the Just Trish podcast, denying the broken finger and suggesting exaggeration. Rosanna Pansino disputed Mongeau's claims, stating she misrepresented events and that filming conditions were less demanding than in previous seasons; Pansino's comments drew backlash from viewers who felt she dismissed Mongeau's concerns. Trisha Paytas, Mongeau's co-host and friend, publicly supported Mongeau and criticized Graceffa and Pansino for downplaying the allegations.
