Leonid and Friends was founded by Leonid Vorobyev, a multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer trained at the East Siberian Institute of Culture. The band's first video, a cover of Chicago's '25 or 6 to 4,' was recorded in 2014. With Ukrainian vocalist Serge Tiagniryadno, their YouTube videos went viral, amassing millions of views. The band released three Chicago tribute albums under the title Chicagovich, and later expanded their repertoire to include songs by Earth, Wind & Fire, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and others.

The band first toured the United States in 2019, following earlier tours in Russia. In July 2019, they were joined on stage by Chicago's original drummer Danny Seraphine. The 2020 tour was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the band resumed US tours in 2021, 2022, and late 2023. In 2024, they performed their first cruise gig on the Norwegian Pearl. The band's lineup has included musicians from Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus, with past member Serge Tiagnyriadno leaving the band in 2022; reports that he joined the Russian invasion of Ukraine are unconfirmed.
