Lore & Background
Set hundreds of years before the events of Starsiege: Tribes, Vengeance depicts the birth of the growing Tribal War. It focuses on the events surrounding five different characters over the course of two generations and how they each contribute to the developing war. The story begins with a Phoenix sub-clan leader named Daniel abducting Princess Victoria. They fall in love, but after a raid staged by the Blood Eagle tribe, Daniel kills the Imperial King, and Victoria kills Daniel. Victoria gives birth to Julia. Years later, Daniel's brother Jericho kills Victoria, leading Julia to become an anti-Tribal extremist. Julia eventually learns her true father is Daniel, joins the Phoenix, and foils a scheme by Olivia and Seti to escalate the war. The game ends with Mercury and Seti killed by Julia, but Olivia escapes.
Reader's Guide
As a primarily first-person shooter, Tribes: Vengeance places the player in control of an infantry soldier in power armor. The player can toggle to a third-person view at any time. There are multiple pilotable vehicles, restricted to third-person camera. The game features jetpacks and 'skis' on all power armor. Jetpacks allow short flight using an energy meter that regenerates when not active. Skiing is a frictionless ground-travel mode that costs no energy. Combat uses ranged weapons. Each character, vehicle, and machine has hit points, repairable by repair packs; infantry can pick up medkits. There are three armor classes: light, medium, and heavy. The player has three weapon slots, grenades, and a utility slot for items like repair packs, speed packs, energy packs, and deployables. A grappler gun adds movement options. The single-player campaign follows five playable characters through 18 missions played in achronological order. Multiplayer offers five default game types: Arena (team free-for-all, no respawn, rounds), Ball (two teams, throw ball into enemy goal), Fuel (collect and deposit fuel), Rabbit (free-for-all with a flag), and Capture the Flag.
