Sailing harnesses the wind through sails, wing sails, or kites to move a craft across water, ice, or land, following a chosen course that is often part of a larger navigational plan. From prehistory until the latter part of the 19th century, sailing vessels were the dominant means of maritime trade, transportation, and exploration, enabling long-distance voyages that were impossible overland. Naval power during this era also relied on sail, culminating in the gun-armed warships of the Age of Sail. Steam propulsion gradually replaced sail as technology improved, offering higher average speeds and scheduled services, while better fuel economy ultimately made steam more profitable for commercial shipping. In the 21st century, most sailing is recreational or sport, divided into racing and cruising, which can range from daysailing to extended ocean crossings.
The physics of sailing derive power from the wind, generating both lift and drag. Sails are set to an angle that optimizes wind power based on the apparent wind—the wind as sensed from the moving craft.
