A sail is a tensile structure, typically fabricated from woven materials such as canvas or polyester cloth, laminated membranes, or bonded filaments, and shaped in three or four sides. It harnesses wind power to propel a variety of sailing craft, including ships, sailboats, windsurfers, ice boats, and land vehicles. Propulsive force arises from a combination of lift and drag, determined by the sail’s angle of attack relative to the apparent wind—the air velocity experienced by the moving craft, which combines true wind and the craft’s own motion.
