The Aerialbots were not a pre-existing Cybertronian unit but were created on Cybertron by Vector Sigma and later brought to Earth. They were specifically constructed to counter the Decepticon Stunticons, a ground-based threat that had been terrorizing Earth's highways. Rather than being built for general air superiority, their unique personalities reflecting their specific flight capabilities came into play against this specific menace. While they shared a common purpose, their individual egos often clashed; Silverbolt was noble and led the team, Slingshot was anxious, Air Raid was reckless, Skydive was wise, and Fireflight was initially cowardly but grew braver.

This internal discord frequently prevented them from combining into Superion until faced with overwhelming odds that forced them to trust one another completely. Their most defining characteristic is their ability to merge into Superion, the first Autobot combiner in Transformers history, debuting in 1985. When united, they gain immense strength and a singular mind that suppresses their individual flaws, creating a warrior of unparalleled power. However, this transformation requires absolute synchronization; if any member hesitates or acts out of self-preservation, the combination fails.
