May Day (Washington College)
Nude flagpole run at Washington College on May Day.
May Day at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, involves students running naked around the campus flagpole on the nights of April 30 and May 1. The tradition began in 1967 when English professor Bennett Lamond took his freshman class to the green for a maypole, wine, and strawberries; later that night, male students moved the maypole, undressed, and danced. Over the decades, the celebration has included daytime streaking and, in recent years, has been toned down, with clothing staying on until midnight.
