Nagoya Protocol

The Nagoya Protocol is a 2010 agreement that builds on the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Its full name is the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity, often shortened to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS). The protocol focuses on one of the CBD’s three main goals: making sure that when genetic resources are used, the benefits are shared fairly and equitably. This is meant to support the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The agreement requires countries that sign on to take specific steps regarding who can access genetic resources, how benefits are shared, and how to ensure compliance with the rules.

The protocol was adopted on 29 October 2010 in Nagoya, Japan, and became legally binding on 12 October 2014. By August 2025, 142 parties—141 UN member states plus the European Union—had ratified it.
