Lore & Background
Twenty-Fifth Bam's story begins in isolation beneath the Tower, where he lived with only Rachel as his companion. When she entered the Tower, his grief drove him to somehow open its sealed doors—an act that classifies him as an Irregular, a rare category of beings who enter from the outside. Irregulars are feared and stigmatized by the Tower's inhabitants, including High Rankers and King Jahad himself, because they can use Shinsu with little to no constraints, regardless of contracts with floor administrators. This is significant because only an Irregular can kill Jahad, who struck a contract with the Tower Guardians that made him immortal. Bam's journey is shaped by this paradox: he is a force of change that the Tower's rulers dread, yet his personal motivation remains simple—reuniting with Rachel.
Reader's Guide
Twenty-Fifth Bam is the central protagonist of Tower of God, a boy who entered the Tower as an Irregular after Rachel left him. His journey is defined by his search for Rachel and his growth as a climber. As an Irregular, he can use Shinsu with little to no constraints, a fact that makes him both powerful and feared. He learns to manipulate Shinsu, including techniques like flow control—using the temporary flow of Shinsu to attack—and reverse flow control to defend. Flow control is a favored technique of his. Key moments include his entry into the Tower, his alliance with other Regulars, and his confrontation with the Tower's hierarchy. His role evolves from a naive boy into a figure who challenges the very foundations of the Tower, driven by his bond with Rachel and the truth of his own origins.
A World Built on Shinsu
The Tower is a mysterious structure that is completely enclosed and hosts many unique environments. It is permeated by an element called 'Shinsu', which has strange properties similar to magic. Shinsu is roughly translated as 'Divine Water' and varies in concentration on each floor—diffuse and inconspicuous on lower floors, but viscous and flowing like water on higher floors, requiring high Shinsu resistance to enter. Residents must form a contract with the floor's guardian to manipulate Shinsu. Shinsu can be manipulated to enhance physical abilities, create weapons, and manipulate elements. Control is measured in Bang (units of control), Myeon (size of units), and Soo (concentration). Shinsu reinforcement is a technique used to strengthen the body, commonly used by Regulars. Those strong with Shinsu have their aging slowed to the point of effective immortality. Flow control, a technique using the temporary flow of Shinsu to attack, is favored by Twenty-Fifth Bam.
The Irregular Paradox
Bam is an Irregular—one of the rare individuals who can open the Tower's sealed doors from the outside. Irregulars have a special connection with the Tower, able to use Shinsu with little to no constraints, regardless of contracts with floor administrators. This makes them feared and stigmatized, even by High Rankers and King Jahad. The Irregular known as Enryu killed the administrator and guardian of the 43rd floor, a feat once thought impossible. Only Irregulars are exempt from the contract Jahad struck with the Tower Guardians that made him immortal, meaning only an Irregular can kill Jahad. This fact drives much of the plot in Tower of God.
