Lore & Background
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning was developed by Mythic Entertainment, which had previously created Dark Age of Camelot. The game's Realm versus Realm system was adapted from that earlier title. Development originally began under Climax Online but was canceled in June 2004 due to high roll-out costs; Climax continued with its own funds until late 2004, when the project was shut down for lack of a publishing agreement. Mythic acquired the license on May 18, 2005, and started a new project from scratch, canceling its own Imperator Online in the process. Games Workshop remained involved to ensure fidelity to the Warhammer Fantasy universe.
Reader's Guide
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is significant as a major MMO that attempted to focus almost entirely on player-versus-player conflict within a persistent war system. Its Realm versus Realm combat, with four types of engagement—Skirmishes, Battlefields, Scenarios, and Campaigns—allowed players to fight for zone control and ultimately sack enemy capital cities. The game featured two factions (Order and Destruction) with three racial pairings and four career choices per army. Despite generally positive reviews and strong initial sales, subscriber numbers dropped from 800,000 to 300,000 within months. The game shut down in 2013 when the license agreement with Games Workshop ended. Its legacy includes a fan-run private server, Return of Reckoning, which has remained active since at least 2014 and was still running as of May 2026.
