History

The trophy was first presented at the conclusion of the 1977–78 NHL season. It was the fifth and final major NHL award named after a general manager or owner from the Original Six teams, joining the Art Ross Trophy, James Norris Memorial Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy, and Jack Adams Award. Bob Gainey of the Canadiens was the first recipient and won it four consecutive times. Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins holds the record for the most wins with six.

Guy Carbonneau, Jere Lehtinen, Pavel Datsyuk, and Aleksander Barkov are tied for third-most with three wins each. The Montreal Canadiens have received the trophy eight times, the most of any team. Only once has a Selke winner also claimed the Hart Memorial Trophy, when Sergei Fedorov did so in the 1993–94 season. No Art Ross Trophy winner has ever won the Selke, though Fedorov finished second in scoring in 1994 and Joe Sakic placed second in Selke voting in 2001. The highest point total by a Selke winner was 127, achieved by Doug Gilmour in the 1992–93 season.
