On February 7, 1976, at Maple Leaf Gardens, Darryl Sittler delivered a performance that eclipsed Maurice Richard's 1944 record. In an 11–4 victory over the Boston Bruins, Sittler scored six goals and added four assists for ten points, setting an NHL record that still stands. Remarkably, every single point was recorded against rookie goaltender Dave Reece. This feat made him the most recent player to score six goals in a single game. The atmosphere at the Gardens shifted from anticipation to disbelief as the scoreboard climbed. Years later, on October 15, 2016, the team honored this legacy by officially retiring his number 27 alongside Frank Mahovlich's to celebrate the club's 100th season.

Sittler was selected eighth overall by the Maple Leafs in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. He was named team captain on September 10, 1975. In his first season as captain, he became the first Leaf ever to reach the 100 point mark. He tied the playoff record for most goals in one game, with five against the Philadelphia Flyers. His 117 points in 1977–78 earned him a Second Team All-Star selection. He was traded to the Flyers on January 20, 1982, and later to the Detroit Red Wings before the 1984–85 season.
