Playing career
Hollowell began his junior career with the Niagara Falls Canucks of junior B hockey under Frank Pietrangelo, after playing 38 games for the Niagara Rivermen Minor Midget club where he recorded 8 goals and 19 assists. He was selected by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 12th round of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection Draft. His first OHL goal came on December 28, 2014, against the Saginaw Spirit, and he finished his rookie season with two goals and four assists in 11 games. Although eligible for the 2017 NHL entry draft, Hollowell went undrafted but attracted interest from the Toronto Maple Leafs, who invited him to their prospect camp. Returning to the Greyhounds for 2017–18, he placed fifth among OHL defencemen in scoring with 12 goals and 44 assists in 63 games. The Maple Leafs then selected him in the fourth round of the 2018 NHL entry draft. He attended Toronto Marlies training camp but was sent back to the Greyhounds for the 2018–19 season, where he was named an alternate captain alongside Jordan Sambrook and Morgan Frost. As an overager, Hollowell posted 24 goals, 53 assists, and 77 points in 64 games, earning a spot on the OHL First All-Star Team. On March 7, 2019, the Maple Leafs signed him to an entry-level contract. After his OHL career ended, he joined the Toronto Marlies during their Calder Cup run, noting that the adjustment to professional hockey involved facing bigger, older, and positionally smarter players. He attended Maple Leafs training camp but was reassigned to the Marlies for 2019–20, beginning the season with the ECHL affiliate Newfoundland Growlers. On October 6, 2019, he scored his first ECHL goal in an overtime win against the Reading Royals. He made his AHL regular season debut in an 8–5 victory over the Texas Stars on November 16, 2019, but was reassigned to the ECHL on November 24.
