History

In 2001, the Las Vegas franchise ended its long partnership with the San Diego Padres and became the top minor league affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team was renamed the Las Vegas 51s, a nod to the nearby Area 51 military base famous for alleged UFO and alien technology secrets. A new logo featuring a grey alien head and a mascot named Cosmo were introduced. Despite the fresh identity, on-field success remained elusive. Over eight seasons as the Dodgers' Triple-A club, the 51s managed only two winning records. Their sole division title came in 2002 under manager Brad Mills, when they finished with the league's best record at 85-59 but fell to the Edmonton Trappers in the playoffs, three games to one.

Media

Two daily papers, the Review-Journal and the Sun, covered the Las Vegas 51s. KRLV 920-AM broadcast every game, with Russ Langer and Matt Neverett handling play-by-play. The Stars and 51s launched several notable broadcasters, including Fox Sports' Colin Cowherd.
