Development
The Torchlight series was originally created by Runic Games, founded by veterans of Diablo, Hellgate: London, and Fate who had worked at Flagship Studios. Runic initially developed Torchlight as a single-player game, with plans for a future MMO. Perfect World Entertainment invested in Runic during Torchlight II's development, gaining majority control to fund the planned MMO. In 2014, co-founders Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer left Runic to form Double Damage Games, leading to a shift in the studio's plans. Runic then developed Hob, a puzzle-driven adventure game, instead of the Torchlight MMO. Torchlight III was ultimately developed by Echtra Games and published by Perfect World Entertainment.
Reception
Torchlight III received mixed or average reviews according to Metacritic, with critics generally considering it inferior to prior franchise entries. Destructoid scored it six out of ten, calling its campaign forgettable and noting that dedicated Torchlight II players would feel underserved. Push Square found the visuals and core gameplay acceptable but the title overly familiar and crushingly linear. PC Gamer described the dungeons as cookie cutter and stated that what was missing outweighed what was present. RPGamer criticized the online multiplayer process as frustrating. Nintendo Life praised the rewarding gameplay loop and replayability while noting technical issues and an underutilized Fort system. CGM and Shacknews gave more positive assessments, highlighting the simplistic nature and co-op mode.
