Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms

A free-to-play tactical shooter with cover-based combat and class abilities.

Last updated

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms is a free-to-play multiplayer third-person tactical shooter released for Microsoft Windows in 2014. It is part of the Ghost Recon series and was shut down on December 1, 2016, due to a decline in users.

Development

Ghost Recon Phantoms was initially known as Ghost Recon Online during its beta phase. Ubisoft announced on May 24, 2011, that its Singapore studio would develop the game for a late 2011 closed beta, supported by microtransactions. At E3 2011, Nintendo announced a Wii U version, and Ubisoft showed trailers and demos for that platform.

The Windows version was confirmed as free-to-play requiring a Uplay account. Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata expressed no opposition to the free-to-play model for Wii U. Although the Wii U version was absent from E3 2012, Ubisoft reaffirmed its release. Ubisoft's Tony Key stated the PC version was the primary focus, and the Wii U version's development team also worked on the PC version, with attention shifting to Wii U after PC completion.

Reception

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms received a Metacritic aggregate score of 70, indicating mixed or average reviews. IGN gave a score of 7.5 out of 10, with reviewer Lief Johnson noting surprise at a free-to-play Ghost Recon installment so soon after Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. The game featured over a thousand U.S. dollars' worth of DLC, making it Ubisoft's most expensive release.
