Gameplay
The game combines missions with a mini-game system, progressing through nine chapters as farm animals chosen by the player. An extra farm animal can be unlocked by having Nickelodeon games included in the 'Crossover' event at the time. As chapters advance, players meet new characters, unlock areas, and earn in-game currency. Travel around the Barnyard involves exploring or following the story by completing missions initiated by text messages from barn animals, located via a '!' on the map. The game increases in variety through later chapters. Midway, the playable character Ben is lost, mirroring the movie. By Chapter 8, leader Otis runs off, leaving the player in charge, until a final stand against the final boss with Otis and the other animals. The number of missions depends on the chapter. The storyline loosely follows the movie but takes its own path, with characters dying and being introduced. Completed missions become replayable minigames. Most missions occur during the day and must be finished before a timer runs out, while some are nighttime missions requiring completion by morning or before the timer expires.
