The Voice (American TV series) season 15

A fifth coach and a digital comeback stage debut.

Last updated

The Voice returned for its fifteenth season on NBC in September 2018. A fifth coach, Kelsea Ballerini, joined the panel to guide eliminated artists through a new digital series, The Comeback Stage. Winner Chevel Shepherd secured Kelly Clarkson her second coaching victory, making Clarkson the first female coach to win multiple seasons.

The Knockouts

The Knockouts began on October 29. Coaches could steal one losing artist from another team or save one of their own who lost.

Twenty-four contestants advanced to the Live Playoffs, with Mariah Carey advising all teams. Kelly Clarkson grouped three of her members into one knockout after Cody Ray Raymond withdrew for personal reasons; two advanced, and the third was eliminated. The October 30 episode honored season one finalist Beverly McClellan, who died from stage 3c endometrial cancer.

The Comeback Stage

The Comeback Stage was a digital companion series exclusive to The Voice mobile app, YouTube channel, Instagram TV, Facebook, Twitter, and NBC.com. After failing to turn a chair in the blind auditions, artists could be selected by fifth coach Kelsea Ballerini for her six-person team. The stage had three rounds: a Battle round where artists performed solo songs for Kelsea's favor; a Knockout round with three artists, two advancing; and a final stage during the Live Playoffs where the two remaining artists performed live for America's votes via the first Twitter Instant Save of the season. The winner officially joined one of the four main teams as part of the Top 13.

Live shows

The Live Playoffs comprised episodes 15 and 16. Twenty-four artists performed; two from each team advanced by viewers' vote, and each coach completed their team with their own choice. The Monday broadcast featured all teams; Tuesday broadcast showed results and the final Comeback Stage matchup. Ballerini coached six artists who did not turn a chair; two, Ayanna Joni and Lynnea Moorer, competed via America's vote for a place in the Top 13.

Moorer won The Comeback Stage and joined Team Kelly. The week's theme was Dedications; the three artists with fewest votes competed for an Instant Save, with two leaving. Live show voting changed: iTunes purchases were replaced by Apple Music streams counting as votes, and only the artist with the most streams received a fivefold multiplier. The Apple Music multiplier was awarded to Reagan Strange; Kirk Jay's single charted in the top 10.

The next week's theme was Fan Night; the two artists with fewest votes competed for an Instant Save, with one leaving. The Apple Music multiplier was awarded to Strange; Kennedy Holmes and Kymberli Joye had singles in the top 10. The multiplier was later awarded to Chris Kroeze; Sarah Grace and Kirk Jay had singles in the top 10.

Controversies

The Instant Save during the Top 10 garnered controversy. The bottom group included Dave Fenley, DeAndre Nico, and Reagan Strange. Adam Levine made comments some fans felt were unfair to Nico, advocating for Strange, who could not perform due to health reasons, while briefly touching on Nico's performance. Kelly Clarkson defended Levine's speech while applauding Nico.

The vote was reported close, with Strange advancing by one percent (38% to Nico's 37%). Fans criticized Levine online for lack of respect toward Nico; Nico later expressed frustration, saying Levine sold him out. Levine briefly addressed the controversy by having Nico and Strange FaceTime, but Nico and his mother revealed on Twitter and Instagram that Levine never apologized. Strange was eliminated the following week; some fans felt her elimination was compensation for Nico's, while others saw it as fair.

The controversy had lasting effects into the following season: by the live Cross-Battles, Levine's team was reduced from eight to two members, with Levine adding two more via save and steal, likely due to angry voters refusing to support Team Adam members; the remaining members were voted out over the next two weeks. This controversy may have factored into Levine's departure the following year.
