Lore & Background
His story ends tragically during the event known as the Recreance. After centuries of dying and returning to battle, the Heralds broke under the psychological torment inflicted by their enemy. Jezrien was among those who died in this final collapse, leaving his sword behind. Centuries later, Oathbringer chose a new wielder, Kaladin, suggesting that the ideals Jezrien championed were not entirely lost despite the Herald's fall.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled across the shattered plains of Naraketh, carrying the scent of ozone and iron. Jezrien stood atop the ridge, his armor gleaming with a light that defied the encroaching storm. Behind him, the other Heralds waited, their faces etched with exhaustion from lifetimes of war. He raised Oathbringer high, the blade humming with a resonance only they could hear. 'For Roshar,' he whispered, though the words felt heavy on his tongue. The sky tore open above them, not to bring salvation, but to signal the end of their long vigil.
Reader's Guide
The Heralds are often remembered as divine saviors who return to fight Odium every ten thousand years. This cycle formed the basis of the Vorin faith, though much was misunderstood by later generations. In truth, Jezrien and his peers were mortal beings bound by a terrible pact with the Almighty to die repeatedly in service against the enemy. Their final stand occurred during the Last Desolation, an era known as the Recreance. Instead of continuing the cycle of death and rebirth, the Heralds broke their oaths. Jezrien died alongside his brothers and sisters, leaving behind a legacy of broken promises that shaped Roshar's history for millennia. Modern scholars often debate whether they were traitors or victims. The truth lies in the torment Odium inflicted upon them, forcing them into madness. Jezrien's sword, Oathbringer, remained dormant until Kaladin Stormblessed took it up, signaling a potential end to the cycle of failure and a new path for leadership on Roshar.
