Dr. Hibbert

Springfield's near-genius physician who chuckles at tragedy and charges extra for heart attacks.

Julius M. Hibbert, M.D., is Springfield's most prominent medical professional on The Simpsons, serving as a recurring character since his debut on December 6, 1990, in the episode "Bart the Daredevil." A near-genius with an IQ of 155 and a graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, he balances competence with a greedy, often unempathetic persona. His signature trait is an inappropriate chuckle at misfortune, revealed to be a coping mechanism developed after he was "headed to an early grave" before learning to laugh mindlessly. Originally voiced by Harry Shearer from his debut until 2021, the role has been performed since then by Kevin Michael Richardson following a recasting of non-white characters.

Lore & Background

Dr. Hibbert is a parody of Dr. Cliff Huxtable from Bill Cosby's The Cosby Show, originally conceived as "Julia Hibbert" in the script for "Bart the Daredevil." He is a Republican who attends meetings with Mr. Burns and wears colorful sweaters when off-duty. Despite his wealth and Mensa membership, he engages in dubious practices; in "Make Room for Lisa," he suggested selling a healthy baby on the black market for $60,000 to test Marge's reaction. In "Homer's Triple Bypass," he raised Homer's surgery cost from $30,000 to $40,000 immediately after Homer suffered a heart attack upon hearing the price. He is married to Bernice, who shares his laugh, and they have three children. Flashbacks show him with various hairstyles appropriate to different eras, including an afro and braids.

Reader's Guide

Dr. Hibbert acts as Springfield's primary physician, though his medical ethics are frequently compromised by greed. A Canadian Medical Association Journal analysis praised his humor but labeled him a paternalistic and wasteful doctor, arguing that Dr. Nick Riviera is actually a better role model for cost-cutting and avoiding coroners. Conversely, a rebuttal in the same journal dismissed both as models, citing Dr. Bones McCoy of Star Trek as the only true physician. Hibbert's voice was recast in February 2021 starting with "Wad Goals" when producers decided to stop using white actors for non-white characters. Original voice actor Harry Shearer questioned this decision, noting that all actors are hired to play someone they are not.
