Lore & Background
This arc explores the metaphysical boundaries between different realms of existence. The Dreaming is revealed to have been hidden within Hell since the Fall, a secret kept by Lucifer for eons. This arrangement highlights the complex history shared by the Endless and the divine hierarchy. While Lucifer possesses immense power over his domain, he burdens himself with the role of ruling it. Dream’s refusal to take on Hell demonstrates that true leadership requires a willingness to serve the nature of one's realm, not just wield its power.
Reader's Guide
In this pivotal narrative, Morpheus discovers his realm is missing and traces its location to Hell itself. He journeys through the underworld to negotiate its return from Lucifer Morningstar. The story explores the weight of responsibility as Dream confronts the fallen angel who holds his kingdom hostage. A tense dialogue ensues where Lucifer offers Dream the keys to Hell itself, tempting him with power over damnation. Dream refuses, recognizing he cannot rule a realm built on punishment without losing himself. Consequently, Lucifer decides to abdicate and leave Hell empty, granting Dream his kingdom back while walking away from his own domain forever. This arc introduces Johanna Constantine, who aids Dream in navigating the mortal consequences of these cosmic shifts.
