Composition

The album largely features R&B covers, similar to its predecessor. It includes three compositions by the developing songwriting team of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, as well as two group compositions credited to the pseudonym "Nanker Phelge. 12 × 5 is notable for containing the first, less often heard version of Jerry Ragovoy's "Time Is on My Side," which features a prominent electronic organ instead of the electric guitar heard on the better-known version. After sessions in Chicago in June 1964, the UK label Decca released the five-song EP Five by Five. Because EPs were not lucrative in the US, London Records spread those songs across an album, adding seven new recordings to create a release of 12 songs by five musicians, which inspired the album's title. The additional tracks included the singles "It's All Over Now" and "Time Is on My Side" with their B-sides, plus three songs later included on The Rolling Stones No. 2. Decca used the same cover (minus the lettering) for the band's second UK album, The Rolling Stones No. 2, in early 1965.
