Cast and synopsis

Six of the seven housewives from the fifth season returned. Cynthia Bailey raised her teenage daughter Noelle. Kandi Burruss became engaged to Todd Tucker and planned her debut musical A Mother's Love. NeNe Leakes returned to Atlanta after living in Hollywood and readjusted to married life with Gregg. Kenya Moore fought an eviction notice and explored her early years. Phaedra Parks prepared for her mortician's license after her second child, while clashing with husband Apollo Nida over property renovations. Porsha Williams dealt with divorce from Kordell Stewart and sought independence.

Reception

The season received generally favorable reviews. Entertainment Weekly's Andrew Asare noted after the premiere that the season would involve divorce, strained relationships, and tested marriages and friendships. Vulture's Danielle Henderson said she was riveted after the first episode. Heavy's Lauren Weigle summarized the season as including Kenya twirling, Porsha getting wild in a club, Peter's club Bar One closing, Apollo and Phaedra's marital issues, Kandi and her mother clashing over Kandi's wedding, and accusations of an affair.

She called the season crazy. However, Entertainment Weekly's Jodi Walker criticized the series for disapproving of violence while promoting and broadcasting the fight between Williams and Moore. The premiere drew 3.1 million viewers, tying with the fifth episode for the season's lowest. The fourteenth episode 'Peaches Divided' reached a peak of 4.63 million viewers on February 9, 2014.

The finale attracted 3.81 million viewers. In April 2014, Bravo renewed the series for a seventh season and announced the spin-off The Real Housewives of Atlanta: Kandi's Wedding.

Controversy

NeNe Leakes and Kenya Moore had a heated verbal argument, while Apollo Nida and Moore's assistant Brandon Deshazer fought physically. Kandi Burruss was angered by false allegations about Todd Tucker and told Cynthia Bailey's sister Malorie, 'I will drag you in this, bitch! Rodney Ho of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution called it one of the most violent fights in the show's six-year history. During the reunion special at the Atlanta Biltmore Hotel on March 27, Moore implied Williams was unfaithful during her marriage.

Williams called Moore a 'slut from the '90s', and Moore yelled 'a dumb ho' through a megaphone. Williams then dragged Moore by her hair across the floor. Moore could not complete a police statement until after filming. Williams was arrested and booked for misdemeanor battery on April 18.

Moore threatened to quit if Williams remained, saying they had gone to the edge but knew there was a line. Earlier, in December 2013, Williams faced criticism for saying she believed the Underground Railroad was an actual railroad line.
