Plot
Bradley is stopped at the airport in Minsk, Belarus, and held on suspicion of espionage. Alex tells Celine and Ben about the Wolf River investigation, and Celine orders the staff to keep it under wraps. Chip warns Alex that Bradley may face charges for lying to the FBI. After confronting Chip, Mia discovers the truth and volunteers to assist. Desperate, Alex turns to Paul Marks, who agrees to call on his ties with Russian oligarch Dmitry Ivanov. The three attend an opera with Dmitry and his wife to secure Bradley’s freedom, but Mia hears Dmitry push for more. He wants Paul’s AI software, so Alex suggests UBN license it, even though that could mean federal trouble. Cory, grieving his mother, grows close to Celine; they almost sleep together, and later Celine rifles through Martha’s things for Wolf River evidence. Chip tells Alex the deal fell through and Bradley has been formally charged with conspiracy. Celine undercut the arrangement after a tip from Amanda, Paul’s chief of staff. At home, Cory puts on his father’s jacket and discovers an EPA contamination report for Wolf River in the pocket.
Critical reviews
The episode received mixed reviews. Maggie Fremont of Vulture gave it 2 out of 5 stars, calling the plot involving Alex teaming with Paul Marks to negotiate with a Russian oligarch at the opera to save Bradley from a Belarusian prison "hilarious" and noting the show's departure from its original focus on network morning TV. Emma Fraser of The Daily Beast wrote that Alex should have realized Celine was pulling the strings, but found the show's late-season turn into covert territory welcome and outlandish. Denis Kimathi of TV Fanatic rated the episode 4.5 out of 5 stars, stating that the season has become overcrowded with characters while runtime and episode count remain unchanged. Matthew Fox of Show Snob observed that the penultimate episode offers little resolution but leaves all plot threads in the air, suggesting the season is saving its big swings for the finale.
