Ares 3 Hab

A cramped tin can on an alien world—both a fragile lifeline and an inescapable prison for one stranded astronaut.

The Ares 3 Hab is the pressurized living module and base of operations for the third manned mission to Mars, designed to sustain a crew of six for approximately 30 sols on the Martian surface. After a catastrophic dust storm forces an emergency evacuation, Commander Melissa Lewis and the rest of the crew believe Mark Watney is dead, leaving him stranded alone in the Hab. It becomes his lifeline—and his prison—as he must survive on limited supplies until a rescue can be mounted.

Lore & Background

The Ares 3 Hab is a marvel of space engineering, a collapsible, multi-layered structure designed to be inflated on the Martian surface. It contains living quarters, a laboratory, a galley, and a hygiene station, all connected by a central hub. The Hab's life support systems recycle air and water, while its solar panels provide power. It is anchored to the ground and protected by a thin layer of Martian regolith for radiation shielding. The module is also equipped with a rover airlock for surface excursions and a small garden area for experimental botany.

Reader's Guide

The Ares 3 Hab is the central stage for the first half of The Martian, doubling as a survival shelter and a monument to human resourcefulness. After the dust storm scatters the crew, Mark Watney squeezes every ounce of use from the Hab's dwindling supplies—water, oxygen, and food—to stave off death. He tears apart its oxygenator to generate hydrogen for water, commandeers the rover for power and mobility, and turns the crew's sleeping quarters into a potato farm, fertilizing Martian soil with his own waste.

The Hab's garden is the linchpin of his survival, producing enough calories to keep him alive for months. It also becomes a communications hub: Watney jerry-rigs a link to the long-dead Pathfinder probe, using the Hab's computer, HabCom, to exchange messages with NASA through crackling static. When an explosive decompression finally rips the Hab apart, Watney is forced to flee to the MAV for his final escape. The Hab stands as a stark testament to both the fragility of human life on Mars and the stubborn ingenuity that keeps it flickering.
