Plot
After a love letter addressed to "L. Loud" arrives in the mail, Lincoln calls an emergency sibling meeting. The sender identifies themself only as a secret admirer, so Lucy suggests the siblings send signals to their respective crushes. A second letter arrives, narrowing the recipient to the brunette sisters: Luna, Luan, Lynn, and Lisa. Lucy then advises giving tokens of affection to each love interest.
A final letter mentions attraction to British culture, pointing to Luna, the family's Anglophile. The siblings go to Banger's & Mosh, a British restaurant, where the secret admirer arranged to meet. There, they discover the letters were actually from their mother Rita to their father Lynn Sr., celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their first date. Though not the intended recipient, Luna is moved by her parents' story and gains confidence to express her feelings for her crush, Sam.
The next day, the siblings send love letters to their crushes. Sam, Luna's blonde female bandmate, reads her letter and accepts it, leaving Luna proud.
Production
After introducing the series' first LGBTQ couple, Howard and Harold McBride, the writing staff considered making one of Lincoln's sisters LGBTQ. Story editor Michael Rubiner later said that with ten girls in the family, exploring one as LGBTQ seemed natural. Kevin Sullivan, who wrote "Overnight Success" introducing the McBrides, wrote this episode. To establish Luna as LGBTQ positively, the writers set three principles: give Luna's crush a gender-neutral name, include a male musician named Sully in all shots with Sam to hide her gender until the end, and have Luna's family know Sam is a girl without any issue.
Sam was originally named Max in earlier drafts. Nickelodeon did not bar Sullivan from using the term "lesbian" in dialogue, but he said they could not use such words due to the young audience, and he was proud the episode was not a "coming out" story because the family accepted her. Sullivan called the ending his favorite moment from any series he worked on.
Release and reception
The episode drew 1.89 million viewers upon its initial premiere, a slight increase from the 1.81 million viewers of the previous episode "Potty Mouth." Its airing sparked a fan theory that Luna is bisexual, based on a prior episode "Study Muffin" showing her attracted to a young man named Hugh. Sullivan, who heavily implied Luna was initially conceived as a lesbian, responded that he refused to push LGBTQ-specific terminology into dialogue because Luna had become representative of many young people struggling with their identity.
Without an explicit label in the episode, some viewers declined to definitively label her as bisexual or lesbian. The closing scene revealing Luna as queer received a highly positive response, which the crew found emotional. Valerie Anne of AutoStraddle, who is queer, praised the episode for depicting Luna and Sam as a casual same-sex pair with crushes. Heather Hogan of AutoStraddle ranked it among the top 30 best episodes of animated programs dealing with LGBTQ themes.
Alex Bonilla of Overly Animated noted the episode's potential to take the show in a new direction, as Luna and Sam were among the youngest animated fictional LGBTQ couples at the time, with Luna being fifteen, contrasting with most LGBTQ representation in children's media being background or side characters.
