No Room at the Inn (The Leftovers)

"No Room at the Inn" is the fifteenth episode of *The Leftovers* overall and the fifth of its second season. The series is based on Tom Perrotta's novel. Damon Lindelof, the series' creator, co-wrote the episode with co-executive producer Jacqueline Hoyt, and Nicole Kassell directed it. It aired on HBO in the U.S. on November 1, 2015.

In the episode, Matt takes his wife Mary out of Miracle, Texas, for an MRI in Austin, where he makes a surprising discovery. Nielsen Media Research reported that an estimated 0.625 million households watched the broadcast, with a 0.3 ratings share among adults aged 18–49. Critics praised the episode, and Christopher Eccleston's performance was widely acclaimed.

The plot follows Matt's daily routine with Mary, hoping to trigger another temporary recovery. Growing desperate, he brings her to Austin for an MRI, where he learns she is pregnant. Because the hospital had to treat Mary without Matt knowing about the pregnancy, he must accept liability, which he happily does. On the way back to Miracle, Matt stops to help a man and his son with a broken-down car. The man knocks Matt out with a wrench and steals their wristbands, which are needed to enter Miracle. While dazed, Matt sees Mary briefly speak, saying the baby will die unless they return to Miracle, then she goes catatonic again. The thief also cut the car's engine, forcing Matt to push Mary's wheelchair.

At Miracle's entrance, they are denied entry without wristbands. An officer lets them into the visitor center to request replacements, but Matt's request is denied. He gets into a fight with a man who insults Mary, and Kevin and John pick him up from detention. John confronts Matt about Mary's pregnancy, accusing Matt of having sex with her without consent, and refuses to believe she recovered. Because John will not sponsor Kevin as a new resident, Matt and Mary are denied wristbands.

At a refugee camp outside Miracle, a Swedish man offers to sneak them in for $1,000. With no money, Matt asks a woman for help. She agrees to pay him if he hits a willing man with an oar as hard as possible. Matt does so, breaking the oar and knocking the man unconscious. The Swedish man agrees to help anyway, instructing Matt to use a drainpipe. As Matt and Mary try to enter through the pipe, a thunderstorm causes flooding, washing them back to the camp.
