Scared and Running

A missing girl's trail leads to a motel room revelation.

Last updated

The thirty-first episode of The Killing, titled "Scared and Running," first aired on June 23, 2013. Coleman Herbert wrote the episode, and Dan Attias directed it. The story follows Detectives Holder and Linden as they learn that a potential victim managed to get away from the killer.

With help from Bullet, they try to track the victim’s movements, while Bullet also hopes to locate her missing friend, Kallie. Kallie’s mother, Danette, becomes increasingly anxious and uncovers something troubling about her boyfriend, Joe. Meanwhile, Seward receives a visit from the woman who adopted his son.

Plot

In the episode, a badly injured girl runs into the road and is hit by a car, but she escapes before the driver can help. The driver then notices a man’s silhouette in his headlights. The next morning, Danette wakes up to find she missed a call from Kallie.

Her boyfriend, Joe Mills, returns to the trailer after being gone most of the night. Danette expresses her worry about Kallie, but Mills dismisses her and leaves for work. Holder and Linden visit Danette after learning from Mama Dips that Mills is her son.

Linden informs Danette that Mills made the porn video of Kallie. Danette insists Mills never looked at Kallie in a sexual way and mentions that Kallie tried to call her the night before. Skinner calls Holder with a possible sighting of Mills.

At the accident scene, Skinner tells the detectives the girl had red hair and was badly hurt. The driver says a man chased the girl through the forest. Linden follows the girl’s original path and finds a red biohazard bag hanging on a tree. Back in the car, Linden and Holder interpret the empty bag as a sign the girl is still alive and begin searching the area and the city for her.

In prison, Alton rehearses a speech for his victims’ family. When inmate Dale says God has already forgiven them, Seward replies he is not asking for forgiveness. Elsewhere, Becker requests six volunteer guards for Seward’s execution, but Henderson does not sign up.

Linden and Holder visit Beacon Home. Pastor Mike suggests they check one of the city’s three remaining 24-hour clinics. Outside, Bullet arrives and asks about the plan.

Holder says they will look for Kallie at the clinics. Bullet says she has a better idea and gets into their car. She directs them to an overpass where Kallie sometimes sleeps.
