Alive, She Cried

A vital live collection capturing The Doors from 1968 to 1970, released in October 1983.

Alive, She Cried stands as the second official live album by the American rock band The Doors, released in October 1983 by Elektra Records. Serving as the follow-up to the 1970 release of Absolutely Live and produced by Paul A. Rothchild, this collection captures the band's dynamic energy from various concerts recorded between 1968 and 1970. The album's title is directly taken from a line in the song "When the Music's Over." This record emerged during a resurgence in the band's popularity fueled by the 1979 film Apocalypse Now, which featured their song "The End," and the 1980 release of the compilation Greatest Hits.

Lore & Background

The push to release this music followed a significant resurgence in interest around the band. After the 1979 film Apocalypse Now reintroduced "The End" to a new audience and the 1980 compilation Greatest Hits brought back hits from seven years prior, Elektra Records moved forward with capturing more live material. The recordings span shows in Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, Boston, and Copenhagen. Notable moments include John Sebastian of the Lovin' Spoonful joining the band on stage to play harmonica on Willie Dixon's "Little Red Rooster." The setlist features covers like "Gloria," originally a hit for Them, alongside an extended version of their best-known song, "Light My Fire." This album remained in circulation until 1991, when it was discontinued following the release of In Concert, a double-album that included every song from Alive, She Cried and Absolutely Live plus additional live tracks.

Reader's Guide

Retrospective analysis by Bruce Eder at AllMusic suggested that Alive, She Cried helped solve a specific problem left by its predecessor, Absolutely Live. The earlier album had left "more casual fans rather cold" due to the absence of any of the band's biggest hits, which this release successfully addressed. However, Eder pointed out a revealing detail: the inclusion of tracks here also explained why "Light My Fire" had not made it onto the prior live album. Musically, the lineup remains consistent with the classic quartet: Jim Morrison on vocals, Robby Krieger on guitar, Ray Manzarek on organ and keyboard bass, and John Densmore on drums. Technical credits go to Bill Gazecki as engineer, Jim Marshall for photography, and Jeff Lancaster for design.
