The Deep's Animal Communication
A lonely god of the sea who can talk to fish but struggles to connect with people.
The Deep's Animal Communication is a unique superhuman ability possessed by Kevin 'the Deep' Kosnoff, allowing him to speak with and understand marine life. Unlike his other powers of hydrokinesis or pressure resistance, this specific talent serves as both a comedic relief mechanism and a tragic symbol of his isolation from humanity. While he can command fish, sharks, and other ocean dwellers, the power often highlights his desperate need for connection in a world that rejects him.

Lore & Background
The tragedy of this ability lies in its inversion: The Deep finds genuine loyalty, friendship, and understanding only among creatures that humans fear or exploit. His bond with his 'best friend' shark, Timothy (often called Timmy), illustrates how he projects human emotions onto animals because he cannot find them elsewhere. This power underscores the central theme of the franchise regarding the hollowness of celebrity culture; while he is a global icon, his truest relationships exist underwater, far removed from the prying eyes of the media and the corrupt machinery of Vought.
Reader's Guide
Originating from Compound V, this power is not natural but chemically induced. It is exclusive to The Deep within the known canon, though other supes may possess minor sensory enhancements regarding animals. Known feats include negotiating peace between rival shark pods, commanding schools of fish to form complex shapes for publicity stunts, and receiving warnings from marine life about underwater dangers or human threats. He has demonstrated the ability to understand a wide variety of species, from cephalopods to cetaceans. However, significant limitations exist. The power appears restricted strictly to aquatic environments; he cannot communicate with land animals like birds or dogs. Furthermore, the complexity of the conversation often depends on the intelligence of the creature, meaning interactions can be simple and instinctual rather than philosophical. There are no known countermeasures that block this ability, but it is useless in air or against human adversaries.
Did You Know?
- The Deep's ability to speak with fish was originally intended as a joke by the writers before becoming a core part of his character arc.
- His shark companion, Timothy (or Timmy), is one of the few characters who consistently defends him against the other members of The Seven.
- The power allows him to understand marine life in their own 'language,' which he translates into human concepts for others.
