Weigh-ins and eliminations
The season began with 50 contestants; trainers Bob and Kim each selected seven for their teams, and the remaining 36 were sent home. After eight weeks, the male and female at-home contestants with the highest percentage of weight loss returned to the ranch: Jaron and Adrian. Both were eliminated before the finale. At the finale, Poppi Kramer from New Jersey won the $50,000 at-home prize by losing 50.43% of her starting weight, narrowly beating Matthew McNutt (48.09%). Brian from California, who lost 50.65% of his weight, won the $100,000 prize for the highest percentage among eliminated contestants who had been on the ranch. The final four included Heather, who did not weigh in because she was five months pregnant. Erik won the $250,000 grand prize with a 52.58% loss.
Voting history
In Week 3, a tie on the red team led to Erik (blue team) casting the deciding vote to eliminate Nelson. In Week 7, Kai used a free pass earned at a temptation to keep herself and Erik safe from elimination; as a result, the votes were not revealed, and Pam and Brian were automatically eliminated. Immunity was awarded in some weeks, and contestants below the yellow line could not vote.
Aftermath
A special before Season 4 revisited past contestants; except for Season One's Andrea, none had kept the weight off. Poppi, the at-home winner, regained the least at 9.4% of her lost weight. Marty regained 21 of 146 pounds and proposed to fellow contestant Amy on-air; they later married and had a child in July 2009. Erik regained 122 pounds and appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to confess. A second special on November 25, 2009, revealed Erik had gained 175 pounds back; Bob invited him to the season 9 finale to weigh in. Brian regained 47 of 156 pounds, the largest regain shown. Poppi Kramer died on July 26, 2018.
