Lore & Background

Fisher's most significant era began on November 14, 1994, when he was promoted from defensive coordinator to replace Jack Pardee for the final six games of the Houston Oilers season. He remained as head coach through the franchise's move to Tennessee in 1997 and the subsequent name change to Titans. The peak of his career arrived in 1999 when the Titans finished 13–3 and reached Super Bowl XXXIV. In that game, they lost to the St. Louis Rams by a score of 23–16 after Kevin Dyson was tackled one yard short of the end zone with no time remaining, an event known as "One Yard Short." Despite compiling six winning seasons over more than two decades, Fisher is noted for having only six postseason appearances. He holds the record for the most regular-season losses in NFL history at 165 and the third-most total losses at 171.

Reader's Guide

For fans following Jeff Fisher, understanding his career requires noting specific turning points and statistical realities. He coached the Oilers/Titans for 17 seasons (1994–2010) before moving to the Rams (2012–2016). His time in Tennessee began when he was hired as head coach towards the end of the 1994 season and ended after the 2010 season when he and the team mutually agreed to part ways. A key defensive moment occurred in a 1981 Week 14 game against the Minnesota Vikings, where Fisher made a leaping interception at the line of scrimmage and recovered a free kick after an intentional safety to seal a 10–9 win.

Fans should also note his unique connection to Bill Cowher; they became rivals as head coaches in 1995, with Fisher's teams holding an 11–7 record against Cowher's Steelers. In 2016, Fisher was fired near the end of the season while coaching the Rams during their return to Los Angeles.
