Ci shrine

A Chinese temple-style building for ancestor and sage worship.

A ci shrine is a semi-religious facility originating in China, used in the East Asian cultural sphere for traditional folk beliefs. It is a temple-style building dedicated to the worship, sacrifice, and commemoration of ancestors, sages, or martyrs, contrasting with Miao shrines that enshrine deities. Ancestral shrines were often built by the public for revered figures, and in some cases living individuals were also honored. The ancestral shrine dedicated to ancestors contains the character 'ci'.
