Siren (TV series)

Siren is an American fantasy drama series centered on Ryn Fisher, a young siren who arrives in a small coastal town searching for her older sister, who was taken. The show debuted on Freeform on March 29, 2018, and was cancelled in August 2020. The first season consisted of 10 episodes. A third season was ordered in May 2019 and premiered on April 2, 2020.

The story takes place in Bristol Cove, Washington, a town long rumored to have been home to mermaids and mermen. The arrival of Ryn Fisher disrupts the community as she searches for her captured sister Donna, who was taken by the local military. Marine biologists Ben Pownall and Maddie Bishop investigate the creature that has come ashore. In the second season, more merpeople appear due to pollution and sonic waves from an oil rig, while Ben’s paralysis is slowly reversed by Ryn’s stem cells. The third season introduces Tia, a mermaid who aims to unite merpeople tribes against humanity, while Ryn’s daughter, carried by a surrogate, must be protected. Ted Pownall, acknowledging merpeople’s existence, follows a dangerous path reminiscent of his ancestor Charles.

Main cast members include Alex Roe as Ben Pownall, a marine biologist who becomes Ryn’s lover and later injects himself with mermaid stem cells, gaining heightened senses and healing. Eline Powell plays Ryn, a mermaid searching for her sister who eventually donates stem cells to help Ben’s mother and has a daughter named Hope. Fola Evans-Akingbola portrays Maddie Bishop, a marine biologist and Ben’s girlfriend who also becomes Ryn’s lover. Ian Verdun is Xander McClure, a fisherman who becomes sheriff. Sibongile Mlambo plays Donna, Ryn’s sister who is killed unintentionally by Xander and later contacts Helen from the spirit world. Rena Owen is Helen Hawkins, a woman descended from merfolk who learns she is related to the Pownalls. Tiffany Lonsdale plays Tia, a mermaid from another colony who seeks to eradicate humanity after losing her unborn child to human captivity.
