Did You Know?
- Only the last six episodes survive on tape; the rest were wiped after broadcasting to be reused.
- A significant part of the erased material has been preserved by recording on a videocassette recorder, though in inferior quality.
- In late 1989 KRO reran the final 6 episodes and footage from a 1976 one-off concert, and many actors reunited in the same costumes.
Overview
This TV series reimagines the Pied Piper of Hamelin story, focusing on the fate of the missing children. After the Piper clears the town of rats, the Mayor breaks his promise to pay, so the Piper leads away all the children plus four adults: Bertram Bierenbroodspot, his fiancée and the Mayor’s daughter Lidwientje Walg, gatekeeper Aernout Koffij, and town crier Hildebrandt Brom. They enter a surreal alternate reality reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, complete with flying pumpkins and carpets, mud-fighting princes, dwarfs, witches, a love elixir, and Wensela’s melting ice palace. The series included more than 120 songs.
