Stoney Burke (TV series)
A rodeo cowboy's quest for the Golden Buckle.
Last updated
Stoney Burke, a contemporary Western series, ran on ABC from October 1962 to May 1963. Jack Lord played the lead, a professional saddle bronc rider chasing the Golden Buckle, the annual championship prize for each rodeo event.
Overview
Stoney Burke is accompanied on the rodeo circuit by friends Ves Painter (Warren Oates), Cody Bristol (Robert Dowdell), and E. J. Stocker (Bruce Dern). During his quest for the Golden Buckle, he becomes entangled in the lives of many people. Jack Lord stated he wanted the series to move beyond rodeos into thematically solid stories, aiming to gently lift the moral tone of society.
Production
Leslie Stevens produced the show through Daystar Productions in a partnership with United Artists. Dominic Frontiere wrote the music for each episode.
Two versions of “The Stoney Burke Theme” were released: one by Maureen Bayand on United Artists, and another by Nelson Riddle on Capitol. The series aired Monday nights from 9 to 10 p.m. Eastern Time. By May 1963, syndication was in motion; Economee Television Programs, a United Artists Television subsidiary, announced sales in 14 major markets, including Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Los Angeles.
Reception
The same year Stoney Burke premiered, NBC aired its own rodeo drama, Wide Country. Both series debuted near the end of the era when Western programs were a top television draw.
By the mid-1960s, market saturation affected new shows with weak ratings, though established series like Bonanza and Gunsmoke continued to thrive. Both rodeo series were cancelled after one season. William W. Savage wrote that while the rodeo format offered dramatic possibilities similar to successful Western programs, rodeo performers paled compared to genuine television cowboy heroes.
