Format

Across three rounds, teams compete to name huge hits from different decades, aiming for a £10,000 prize. Every correct answer must include both the song title and the artist.

In the first round, each team hears five five-second clips from hit songs spanning the 1970s through the 2010s. They buzz in when they recognize a track, earning one point per correct answer. These points carry into the next round. Starting with series 8, a team that correctly identifies all five songs in this round wins £500, no matter how the rest of the game goes.

The second round has teams racing to be the first two to reach ten points; the last team to hit that mark is eliminated. All songs in this round share a randomly chosen theme. The gameplay is similar to round one, but with a twist: a correct answer lets the team hear a follow-up song, while a wrong answer puts them on "mute," locking them out of that track and giving the other team a chance to steal the point. The round ends when two teams reach ten points or when the Hit List runs out. If the list runs out and there is a tie, the tied teams play a single tie-breaker track to decide who moves on.

The final round features the two remaining teams. They must identify song titles and artists from the very beginning of each track. Each team has a 45-second clock, and they take turns working through several Hit Lists. Each list contains four songs, and each song has a visual theme—for example, an image of an artist mentioned in the lyrics. Teams alternate choosing which Hit List to use and which song to play next. The choice order is separate from the play order, so a team might pick a song for themselves or for their opponents. Once a list is finished, a new one is chosen. This round uses a chess clock format: the team in control must either correctly identify a song or use a skip before passing control to the other team. The team that runs out of time first is eliminated. Teams can give as many guesses as they like for each song until they get it right or choose to skip. Each team starts with three skips, and each skip can be used three seconds after a track begins.
