Plot

In Washington, D.C., Richard C. Barrington, a 49-year-old conservative columnist, becomes romantically involved with Charlotte (Charley) Drake, a 23-year-old liberal photographer. Their relationship is complicated by political differences, a generation gap, and contrasting lifestyles: Barrington is a gourmet cook living in a luxurious townhouse, while Drake is a vegetarian. Barrington initially has a girlfriend, a literary agent, when he meets Drake. The show's style features rapid pacing and argumentative shouting.

Reception

A Knight News Wire reviewer called the show the best new comedy series of the year, praising its writing and acting but noting the characters spend much time shouting. The New York Times critic found the casting first-rate and the pace finger-snapping, making everything look easy and undemanding. A Copley News Service reviewer expressed disbelief in the central relationship yet concluded it works due to Crenna's skill as a farceur and Peters's spunk and wit, describing the dialogue as crackling and the comedy as well-paced and trenchant.
