Ghost Story (TV series)

A horror anthology hosted by Sebastian Cabot.

A short-lived NBC horror anthology, Ghost Story ran for a single season from 1972 to 1973. Executive producer William Castle oversaw tales of ghosts, vampires, and witches. Its tone and format were often likened to Night Gallery and The Sixth Sense. Low ratings prompted a mid-season retitling to Circle of Fear and a format change.

Production

The anthology series, initially titled Ghost Story, featured a rotating cast of notable actors including Tab Hunter, Helen Hayes, Jason Robards, Patricia Neal, William Windom, Gena Rowlands, Carolyn Jones, Melvyn Douglas, Stella Stevens, Tyne Daly, David Soul, Karen Black, and Jodie Foster. Several episodes were penned by Jimmy Sangster, a British writer and director known for his work with Hammer Films. The episode "House of Evil" was an original teleplay by Robert Bloch, written under the title "The Doll's House."

D.C. Fontana wrote the episode "Earth, Air, Fire and Water," based on a story co-created with Harlan Ellison; both had previously worked on Star Trek. Starting with the fourteenth episode, "Death's Head," which aired on January 5, 1973, the series was retitled Circle of Fear. Executive producer William Castle stated the change was due to low ratings and credited the decision to the head of Screen Gems. The host, Cabot, was removed, and the opening graphics and theme music were also altered. This revised version ran for nine additional episodes.
