Premise
The show leads a target person or people to believe they are contestants on a reality television show, while all other participants—including the host—are actors. Their actions and the outcome are scripted to elicit comedic reactions from the targets. The first season, The Joe Schmo Show (2003), hoaxed a typical reality competition; the second, Joe Schmo 2 (2004), was a Bachelor-like dating series; and the third, The Joe Schmo Show: The Full Bounty (2013), featured aspiring bounty hunters tracking fugitives. The cast of fake contestants included actors who later became well known, such as Kristen Wiig, Natasha Leggero, and Jon Huertas. Voice actor Ralph Garman appeared in all three seasons as the emcee, playing different characters each time. The team behind the show also created the reality hoax series Invasion Iowa.
Episodes
The target of season one was Matt Kennedy Gould from Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The other contestants were archetypes of common reality TV participants. Two actors had brief supporting roles: Ryan Raddatz played Molly's boyfriend William, and Steve Ireland played network executive David Decker. The faux-reality show was named Lap of Luxury, with a $100,000 top prize. Each episode ended with an eviction ceremony where contestants voted someone off; the evicted actor gave a plate with their face to emcee Ralph Garman, who recited a rhyming couplet and broke the plate in a fireplace. In the final episode, the three remaining players faced a vote from evicted houseguests to determine the winner. An unexpected shift occurred when Earl, the Veteran, bonded with Gould; after Earl was voted off, Gould wept and questioned his motives. The show's tone was altered so that later games were rigged to ensure Gould would win. In a sumo wrestling contest, Gould knocked down Kristen Wiig (playing Dr. Pat), causing a real head injury that required hospitalization. The next day, Gould gave Wiig an all-expense-paid spa vacation he had won earlier.
