Production
The title comes from the Mumsnet message board; Cooper told the Times that posting about marriage on AIBU often prompts replies of 'Leave the bastard.' Cooper and Hizli met at drama school, and the show was partly improvised. Filming for the first series took place in 2021 at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol and on location in Gloucestershire, with principal photography finishing in February 2022. The producer is Pippa Brown, the director Jonny Campbell, and executive producers include Jack Thorne, Shane Allen, Jonny Campbell, Daisy May Cooper, Kate Daughton, and Selin Hizli. A second series was commissioned in October 2022 and filmed in October 2024, with guest appearances including Chelsea Peretti, Tom Davis, Denise Black, Jamali Maddix, Kojey Radical, and Charlie Cooper. Filming for the third and final series was under way in June 2026, with broadcast expected later that year.
Broadcast
The show landed on BBC One and iPlayer on 23 September 2022, after its initial premiere was pushed back a week due to the mourning period following Queen Elizabeth II's death. BBC Studios manage the international rights. It reached Hulu in the US on 11 April 2023. The second series debuted in the UK on BBC One and iPlayer on 5 February 2025.
