Premise
Ruy is the son of a low-ranking nobleman who died serving Ferdinand, Count of Castile. Ferdinand, married to Queen Sancha, became King of León after defeating her brother Bermudo in battle. Sancha, who was next in line for the throne, plots with Leonese nobles including Flaín, Count of León, and Ruy's grandfather Rodrigo to overthrow her husband. She is conflicted between her desire to be queen and her love for Ferdinand, while the nobles seek his harm. The king's three sons—Sancho, Alfonso, and García—have their own ambitions, and his daughter Urraca resents being placed behind her brothers in succession due to her gender. Urraca stirs trouble at court seeking power, while her sister Elvira desires only marriage. Ruy is brought to court by his grandfather and becomes squire to Sancho. He is attracted to Jimena, who is intended for an arranged marriage with Orduño, son of Count Flaín. Ruy's rivalry with Orduño over Jimena grows. Learning of the plot against Ferdinand and his grandfather's involvement, Ruy must prevent the king's death without implicating Rodrigo.
Production and release
Filming began on October 1, 2019, in the province of Soria, with locations including Almenar de Soria, Almazán, Calatañazor, Duruelo de la Sierra, and the Montes de Ucero. Shooting also took place in Burgos province, the Aljafería Palace, Teruel province, and the Madrid region. The first season of five episodes was released on December 18, 2020. A second season was confirmed in January 2021 and released on July 15, 2021. Direction was handled by Marco A. Castillo, Adolfo Martínez Pérez, Miguel Alcantud, Arantxa Echevarría, Manuel Carballo, and Alberto Ruiz Rojo.
