Plot

Series 1 follows Maddy Smith and Rhydian Morris as they balance their wolfblood and human lives while keeping their secret hidden. Maddy, who lives with her wolfblood family in Stoneybridge, Northumbria, nears her first transformation. When new student Rhydian arrives at Bradlington High School, Maddy recognizes him as a wolfblood. Rhydian, living with a foster family, only recently began changing and was unaware of wolfbloods. The Smith family claims him as a distant cousin and helps him learn the wolfblood way. Rhydian befriends Maddy's human friends Tom and Shannon, who remain unaware of the secret until the series end, when they learn the truth. A webisode titled The Scape Goat occurs between series 1 and 2. Jana, daughter of wild wolfblood pack leader Alric, persuades Rhydian to take her to a town. When discovered, Alric sentences Rhydian to be tied to a rock without food or water for a fortnight. Rhydian's biological mother Ceri secretly helps him escape. Series 2 is set three months later. Jana arrives in Stoneybridge claiming exile from the wild pack. She befriends the group and eventually leaves to become the new wild pack leader after her father is exiled. Shannon spies on the Smiths collecting werewolf information but destroys the data after Maddy is nearly killed. Another student, Liam, investigates werewolves, steals a dog chew from which Dr. Whitewood extracts Maddy's father's DNA. The results force the Smiths to flee to Canada. Maddy says goodbye and confesses her love for Rhydian.

Production

Series creator Debbie Moon conceived the title after seeing the words 'wolf' and 'blood' in separate book titles in a bookshop. The BBC Writersroom website announced an open call for children's drama scripts; Moon was among eight writers taken to a conference centre in Kent. After intensive development, Wolfblood became one of two new original children's dramas commissioned by CBBC. Filming took place in north-east England with the same crew that filmed Tracy Beaker Returns. Early series locations included Hookergate School and the woods of Rowlands Gill countryside. From series 4 onward, filming moved to Heworth Grange Comprehensive in East Gateshead (called Hawthorn Comprehensive in the series) and areas around Windy Nook and Newcastle. Series 1 was shot in three production blocks: episodes 1–4, 5–8, and 9–13. Series 2, with all new directors, was shot in four blocks: episodes 1–4, 5–8, 9, and 10–13.

Spin-off

Series 2 was accompanied by a 10-part wildlife spin-off series titled Wolfblood Uncovered, hosted by Bobby Lockwood and produced by the BBC Natural History Unit. It compares scenes from Wolfblood with facts about real wolves, showing how wolf behavior such as living in packs, defending territory, fear of fire and enclosed spaces, reliance on smell, and a carnivorous diet is reflected in the characters' actions. A series of shorts called Wolfblood Secrets aired in 2017, featuring interviews with characters about wolfbloods in an interrogation room setting.
