Invincible Robo Trider G7

A sixth-grader pilots a robot while running a company.

Sunrise produced the mecha anime Invincible Robo Trider G7, which ran from 1980 to 1981. It follows sixth-grader Watta Takeo, who juggles school, running a company, and fighting an alien robot empire. Though a super robot show, it grounds the genre by having the hero warn citizens before activating his mecha and accounting for battle costs.

Plot

The Robot Empire attempts to invade Earth. Scientist Nabalon, exiled from the Empire, meets Watta's father, and together they design the transforming robot Trider G7. After his father dies in an accident, Watta must succeed him as company president and as Trider's pilot. He fights to ensure everyone's happiness while managing the company's funds.

Characters

Watta Takeo, an orphaned sixth-grader, becomes the second president of the Takeo General Company and the sole pilot of Trider G7. Umemaro Kakikōji, a 64-year-old manager, instantly calculates Trider's operational costs. Tetsuo Atsui, the only mechanic, repairs Trider and pilots the Shuttle for support. Tōhachirō Kinoshita, a subsection chief, is frivolous but jovial. Ikue Sunabara, an 18-year-old woman, handles accounting and office work. Michitarō Takeo, Watta's father and previous president, is deceased. Nabalon, a scientist who defected from the Robot Empire, designed Trider G7.

Themes

The series aimed to portray how a giant robot would operate in the real world, unlike military depictions in Mobile Suit Gundam. Trider G7's unrealistic abilities are explained by exiled enemy scientists, as its capabilities exceed other Earth-made robots. The Robot Empire has little interaction with the human protagonists, unaware that their own scientists built Trider G7.

Media

Invincible Robo Trider G7 aired 50 episodes from February 2, 1980 to January 24, 1981. It was broadcast in Italy in 1981 as L'Indistruttibile Robot Trider G7. Toy company Clover produced toys of the robot. A DVD boxset was released in 2005, and an Italian boxset in 2012. The series appears in Super Robot Wars video games such as Shin Super Robot Wars and the Super Robot Wars Z metaseries.
