Plot
Four soldiers—Shinobu Fujiwara, Sara Yuki, Masato Shikibu, and Ryo Shiba—pilot the combining Super Robot Dancouga to fight the Muge Zorbados Empire. Unlike typical combining robot series, the component machines fight effectively on their own and do not combine until midway through the series. The story incorporates religious themes from Christianity and Taoist philosophy, with gods appearing in most episodes.
Characters
Shinobu Fujiwara, born in Australia to a Japanese father and Australian mother, was a cadet at the Australian Space Military Academy before the Muge invasion. He transferred to the Bestial Fighter Troop (Jyusenki Tai) and is a straightforward, talented pilot who enjoys hang gliding. Sara Yuki, from the Izu Peninsula, joined the Far East Armoured Unit shortly after Shinobu; she is balanced, civil, and nurturing, with hobbies of swimming and music. Masato Shikibu, born in Iwate Prefecture to an arms-manufacturing plant head, is the youngest Jyusenki Tai member and provides comic relief; he is close friends with Laura Sullivan. Ryo Shiba, an orphan, practiced kenpō after military academy and was recruited by General Ross Igor; he is calm, sensible, and spiritual. Shapiro Keats, former commander of the Australian Military Academy, defected to the Muge forces after torture and rose to commander; manipulative and delusional about godhood, he is shot dead by Sara. Laura Sullivan, an American from Sacramento whose mother was killed by Muge forces, is adopted by Professor Hazuki; she is kind, quiet, and close to Masato and her dog Becky. Ross Igor, a Russian commander of the Jyusenki Tai, is estranged from his son Alan; he dies in episode 29 saving Laura, who is later revealed to be Alan's daughter and Ross's granddaughter. Professor Kotaro Hazuki, the resident scientist and engineer, designed the four mecha forming Dancouga and assumes command after Igor's death.
