Seahorse Seashell Party

A hurricane traps the Griffins indoors.

Last updated

"Seahorse Seashell Party" is the second episode of the tenth season of the American animated television series Family Guy, and the 167th episode overall. It originally aired on Fox in the United States on October 2, 2011. The episode is the second part of the Night of the Hurricane block with The Cleveland Show and American Dad!. It was written by Wellesley Wild and directed by Brian Iles.

Plot

As a hurricane approaches Quahog, the Griffins prepare for its arrival. Brian decides to take magic mushrooms, leading to hallucinations that cause him to cut off his own ear. Stewie stays by Brian's side all night, and after Brian falls asleep he has a surreal nightmare of being attacked by monstrous versions of the Griffins and Quagmire. Stewie eventually takes Brian downstairs for water, and Brian returns to lucidity.

Meanwhile, the rest of the family plays charades and other games but takes their frustrations out on Meg. Having endured years of abuse, Meg loses her temper and confronts Chris for his bullying, then tells Lois about her criminal history and says she may never see her again after turning eighteen. Meg finally calls Peter a "waste of a man," which shocks him. Peter demands Lois make Meg stop, but Lois refuses because he did not stand up for her.

The entire family turns their criticisms on each other until Peter flees upstairs in tears. Meg and Brian discuss the situation, and Meg concludes the family needs a "lightning rod" to absorb their dysfunction. She apologizes to Peter, Lois, and Chris, restoring their egos, and everyone hugs. Stewie breaks the fourth wall to advise the audience about drug use and suggests visiting a local library.

Production and development

The crossover episode "Seahorse Seashell Party" was initially revealed by Seth MacFarlane at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2010. Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly came up with the idea for the crossover, drawing inspiration from 1980s comedy theme nights. MacFarlane called the project an "enormous challenge" and a "substantial undertaking," and opted for a single main storyline to avoid having each writing team handle characters they didn't know.

The episode was set to air on May 1, 2011, but was pulled from the schedule on April 29 after a series of tornadoes in the Southern United States killed nearly 300 people. Fox replaced it with reruns of other shows. MacFarlane supported the decision after speaking with Fox executives, and a company spokeswoman later said the episode would air the next season. Wellesley Wild wrote the episode, and Brian Iles directed it.

Guest stars included Ioan Gruffudd, Dee Bradley Baker, Colin Ford, and Debra Wilson. Gruffudd had last appeared in the season eight episode "The Splendid Source," and Wilson in the season three episode "And the Wiener Is...".

Cultural references

The episode's title comes from a line in Dan Deacon's viral video "Drinking out of Cups." Peter asks to watch "G.I. José," which sparks a parody of G.I. Joe public service announcements featuring a Mexican version of the hero. During charades, Peter brings up the film Fletch. A passing-time gag has Peter singing to the chase music from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Stewie tries to calm Brian's worsening hallucinations by reminding him that seeing Lady Gaga naked was the worst possible outcome. A cutaway spoofs National Geographic documentaries with a clash between an African American woman and an Italian American man. Stewie also mentions Twitter.

Reception

"Seahorse Seashell Party" aired on October 2, 2011, as part of Fox's animation night, preceded by episodes of The Simpsons and The Cleveland Show and followed by an episode of American Dad!. It was viewed by 6.91 million viewers, the highest in its line-up, despite airing opposite Desperate Housewives, The Amazing Race, and a Baltimore Ravens–New York Jets game. The episode garnered a 3.5/8 rating in the 18–49 demographic, also the highest of the animation night.

Viewership and ratings were down from the previous episode "Lottery Fever," which had 7.69 million viewers and a 4.1/9 rating. Critics panned the main plot, particularly the ending. Kevin McFarland of The A.V. Club wrote that shifting to a dramatic bottle episode felt "far too little too late" and gave the episode a D+. Terron Moore of Ology felt much of the episode was wasted and gave it 4.5 out of ten.

TV Fanatic's Kate Moon was less negative but found the confrontation contrived and uninteresting. Critics were polarized on the subplot; McFarland said the animation "fell flat," while Moon thought it would have been more interesting if Stewie had also ingested the mushrooms.
