Lore & Background
Jeter's career began when he was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1992, choosing to sign for $800,000 over attending the University of Michigan. After struggling initially in the minor leagues with the Gulf Coast Yankees and Greensboro Hornets, where he committed a league-record 56 errors in 1993, he developed into the franchise's future leader. He debuted at age 20 in 1995, became the starting shortstop in 1996, won Rookie of the Year, and helped secure the World Series title over the Atlanta Braves that same year. A central figure in the late 1990s and early 2000s dynasty, he was named team captain in 2003, a role he held until his retirement.
