Pyatt grew up playing for the Thunder Bay Kings AAA program alongside New York Rangers defenceman Marc Staal. He began his major junior career in 2003–04 after being drafted by the Saginaw Spirit in the OHL. After a 48-point season in his second OHL year, he was selected 107th overall by the New York Rangers in the 2005 NHL entry draft. He returned to the OHL for two more seasons, culminating in an 81-point campaign in 2006–07, after which the Rangers signed him to a three-year entry-level contract. That season he won the William Hanley Trophy as the OHL's Most Sportsmanlike Player with only 18 penalty minutes.

Pyatt's professional career began in 2007–08 split between the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL) and Charlotte Checkers (ECHL). On June 30, 2009, he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens as part of a multi-player deal. He made his NHL debut on November 5, 2009, and scored his first NHL goal and assist on February 10, 2010. After becoming an unrestricted free agent, he signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 6, 2011, later signing a two-year extension. He later played in Switzerland for Genève-Servette HC, winning the Spengler Cup in 2014 and again in 2015 with Team Canada. He also played for the Ottawa Senators, Vancouver Canucks organization, and in Sweden before retiring after a short stint with SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers.
