Marchment began his junior career with the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League, where he was a high-scoring defenceman noted for assists, including 51 assists in 56 games during the 1987–88 season. He made his NHL debut for the Winnipeg Jets in 1989 but spent much of his early career in the American Hockey League. Over the next several years, he was traded multiple times, moving from the Jets to the Blackhawks, then to the Whalers, and later to the Oilers. On December 30, 1997, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning, but played only 22 games for the team before being sent to the San Jose Sharks on March 24, 1998.

With the Sharks, Marchment enjoyed his most successful period, including a career-high 22 points in the 2001–02 season. He was later traded to Colorado, signed with Toronto, and finished his playing career with Calgary. After retiring, he worked as a scout for the Sharks and as a part-time coach in the Sharks organization. Marchment was suspended 13 times in his first 12 NHL seasons for deliberate attempts to injure other players, and his hits were blamed for injuries to numerous notable players, including Mike Modano, Joe Nieuwendyk, Pavel Bure, and Paul Kariya.
